How to Plan a Quarter with Cadence Weather, Not Just OKRs
OKRs without timing create martyrdom. Timing without goals creates mood-based drift. Solo builders need both: a destination and a weather report.
Cadence Weather (the fuller monthly read) is not a substitute for strategy. It is a way to place hard efforts on days and weeks that will not fight you as hard.
A two-layer quarter
Layer 1: Outcomes (OKR-style)
Pick 3 outcomes max. If you need 7, you do not have a strategy. You have a wish list.
Layer 2: Weather placement
For each outcome, mark:
- Ignition weeks (start, sell, launch, ask)
- Build weeks (deep make)
- Review weeks (measure, cut, repair)
- Recovery weeks (travel, family, medical, deliberate downshift)
You will still work in every week. You will not demand peak ignition energy in a week you already know is Recover-heavy.
A ninety-minute quarterly ritual
- Write the three outcomes on one page.
- Open Cadence Weather and block ignition vs build vs review on a paper calendar.
- Pre-decide what you will not do this quarter (a kill list is more valuable than a goal list).
- Choose one accountability human for a monthly 20-minute check.
- Schedule the next quarterly ritual now so it is not optional later.
Common failure modes
- Using weather as an excuse to avoid hard asks forever
- Ignoring weather and calling burnout "grit"
- Changing OKRs weekly because a single bad week felt like fate
Weather is probabilistic. Effort still matters. The point is to stop spending 100% energy for 20% return on the wrong week.
If you are planning the next quarter this month, write outcomes first, then place them on Cadence Weather. Let the calendar become a strategy document, not a graveyard of optimism.
