Leadership: How to Fire Someone with Dignity

LeadershipDifficult ConversationsHR

You have an employee who is failing. You have tried coaching, PIPs, and moving them to different roles. Nothing works. You know you have to fire them, but you keep delaying it because you feel guilty, or you are afraid of the conflict.

Delaying a firing is not an act of kindness; it is an act of cowardice. You are trapping the employee in a role where they are failing, and you are dragging down the morale of the entire team who has to pick up their slack. True leadership requires you to end the relationship cleanly and with absolute dignity.

What it looks like in a real room

You finally call the meeting. Because you are nervous, you start making small talk. Then you vaguely explain that "things aren't working out" and "we need to make a change." The employee is confused and starts arguing. The meeting takes 45 minutes and ends in a screaming match. You failed the leadership test.

The shadow side

The shadow of firing is making it about you. When you over-explain, apologize profusely, or try to get the employee to agree with the decision, you are trying to alleviate your own guilt. You are asking the person you are firing to comfort you. It is the ultimate failure of executive boundaries.

How to use it on purpose

The meeting should take exactly five minutes. State the decision in the first sentence: "John, today is your last day at the company." Do not argue the reasons. Provide the severance details, explain the logistics of the exit, and wish them well. Be kind, be absolute, and do not leave any room for negotiation.

Why the mix matters

A High-S (Steadiness) leader will agonize over a firing for six months, destroying the team's productivity. A High-D (Dominance) leader will fire someone in the hallway in front of the team, destroying the culture. You must override your DISC default to execute the termination professionally.
