How to Use Your Morning Brief in the First Ten Minutes
Most people open a "daily brief" the way they open email. They skim, feel briefly informed, and then start the day on whoever shouted loudest in Slack.
That wastes the product.
A Morning Brief is useful only if it changes one choice before 9:30 a.m. Not your whole life. One choice.
A ten-minute protocol that works
Minutes 0-2: Read the mode, not the prose.
Look for the operating mode first: Vision, Build, Connect, or Recover. That single label should constrain your calendar. If the day is Recover and you have three "strategy" meetings stacked, you already know the problem is the schedule, not your willpower.
Minutes 2-5: Circle one person.
If the brief names a contact or a relationship signal, write that name on a sticky or in a note. Your job is not to process your whole network. Your job is to not forget the one conversation that compounds.
Minutes 5-8: Pick Do / Delay / Discuss.
Force three lists, even if each list has one item:
- Do today (one outcome that requires your specific style)
- Delay without guilt (real work, wrong day)
- Discuss with a human (not another private spiral in your head)
Minutes 8-10: Protect the window.
If the brief flags a high-energy window, block it on the calendar before someone else does. If you skip this step, the brief becomes theater.
Where people go wrong
High-D readers treat the brief like a to-do list and try to clear it. High-I readers forward insights to three friends and never act. High-S readers agree with every caution and shrink the day too far. High-C readers demand more data from a tool that is supposed to reduce options.
The brief is a constraint engine. Treat it like weather for decisions, not like a second inbox.
DISC tip for the same ten minutes
- D: Limit yourself to one decisive move the brief supports. Do not add three more.
- I: Send one message the brief suggests, then close the chat apps for an hour.
- S: Use the Delay list as permission. Write it down so you do not silently absorb extra load.
- C: Accept "enough signal." Act at 80% confidence on reversible choices.
When you are ready, open today's Morning Brief and run this protocol once before you touch email. The goal is not inspiration. The goal is one cleaner decision before the day decides for you.
