Enneagram Type 1 at Work: When High Standards Become a Cage

EnneagramType 1standardsperfectionismleadership

Type 1 energy at work is the internal quality inspector that never fully clocks out. You notice the crooked slide, the loose process, the ethical corner someone is about to cut. Teams need that. Markets punish the absence of it.

The cost shows up when "correct" becomes the only safe emotion in the room.

What it looks like on a Tuesday

A junior teammate ships a draft that is 85% right. You feel a physical flinch. Instead of naming the two fixes that matter, you mark twenty. They stop showing you work early. You get cleaner late drafts and worse outcomes, because learning moved underground.

Where this breaks

  • Resentment toward people who seem "fine with good enough"
  • Black-and-white moral language about normal business tradeoffs
  • Exhaustion from carrying the conscience of the whole system
  • Difficulty celebrating wins that still contain one flaw

Standards without mercy become a cage for you first, then for everyone nearby.

A protocol that keeps the gift

  1. Rank defects: mission-critical, customer-visible, internal polish. Only the first two block ship by default.
  2. Time-box review: twenty minutes, then decide.
  3. Praise the spine of the work before the nits. Type 1s often skip this and wonder why people brace.
  4. Delegate one standard you own. Teaching the standard multiplies it. Hoarding it bottlenecks it.
  5. Schedule a weekly "good enough" ship on low-risk work so your nervous system practices release.

DISC mix

A High-C Type 1 can freeze a roadmap in the name of integrity. A High-D Type 1 can punish speed that is actually healthy. If this is you, pair with someone who is allowed to say out loud, "This is a two-way door. Ship."

If high standards are your pride and your fatigue, try the defect ranking on your next review. Keep the conscience. Loose the cage.
