Enneagram Type 8: Why Your Strength is Intimidating Your Team

EnneagramType 8Leadership

You pride yourself on being direct, honest, and protective of your team. You will fight any executive who tries to mess with your people. You assume your team feels incredibly safe with you.

They do not feel safe. They are terrified of you. You are an Enneagram Type 8 (The Challenger). Your core motivation is to avoid being controlled or harmed, so you project an aura of absolute, unshakeable strength. But what feels like "protection" to you feels like a steamroller to everyone else.

What it looks like in a real room

An employee makes a minor mistake. You call them into your office and deliver a blunt, loud, 30-second correction. To you, this is efficient and honest, you didn't hold a grudge, you just fixed the problem. To the employee, they just got blasted by a jet engine. They spend the next three days in a state of high anxiety, afraid to make another move.

The shadow side

The shadow of the Type 8 is isolation. Because you refuse to show vulnerability, people stop bringing you their real problems. They hide bad news from you because they don't want to trigger your intensity. You end up surrounded by yes-men, completely disconnected from the reality of your own company.

How to use it on purpose

You must actively dial down your intensity by 40%. When you enter a room, sit back in your chair. Lower your voice. Ask questions instead of giving directives. Your physical presence is already dominant; you do not need to add volume to it. Let the room breathe.

Why the mix matters

A High-D (Dominance) Type 8 is the most aggressive combination in human psychology. It is the profile of a wartime CEO. But if you lead a peacetime company with wartime energy, you will destroy the culture. You must learn to sheathe the sword.
